“You’re looking good!!”
Three words we love to hear after losing some pounds. You sweated buckets and you said ‘No’ to pizzas, cakes and other goodies many time. But, here is the crummy news... this is just the beginning!
Losing weight is a lifestyle change and choice. It isn’t a one-time fix. The real work is MAINTAINING that beautiful body. Let's face it, people – famous or the average Joe – have the tendency of regaining weight after their uphill battle. Why?
Here are several reasons:
1. “Nothing is permanent” Okay, you achieved the ideal weight for your height and all that, but you have to remember, IT CAN CHANGE! You have to keep exercising and you always have to watch what you eat. Losing weight the first time by following those methods does not mean that the weight will stay off for good once you lose what you want to lose.
Many people put some weight back on after achieving their goals because they think, “well I already lost the weight, a few cheat meals and a couple days off from the gym won’t kill me.” True, but then it becomes a bad habit. A bad habit turns into a steady backtrack, and soon enough… you’re looking at yourself in the mirror wondering what happened. So, keep in mind that “Nothing is permanent!” You worked really hard to get your ideal figure, so why waste all that effort?
2. “Easy as pie!” Never assume that it's easy to lose weight, because it's not! Remember the days you almost gave up after 10 push-ups or 15 sit-ups? How about the time you had to wake up early to squeeze in some time for the gym? Some people may make it look easy to lose weight (like TV exercise models?!), but for us 'ordinary' people… it's challenging and exhausting! We KNOW how hard it is, and your effort does not go unnoticed!
It is common for people to be down on themselves when they compare themselves to others – especially when those “others” may not have to work as hard. Don’t let the unrealistic depictions of weight loss discourage you. Once you lose a pound or two, rejoice, keep going, and never become complacent!
3. “Never say Never!” It's unrealistic to say, “I will never ever eat pizza or chocolate again!” Come on, they are too marvelous to condemn for life! The magic word is MODERATION! Many people lose control of their judgment and go overboard, ultimately gaining weight back.
Have a bite; just enough to satisfy your craving. If you keep uttering 'never,' chances are you will think about the stuff for days! What you resist persists, right? So, rather than treating yourself to your favorite unhealthy snacks on a regular basis, try scheduling a “cheat day”; a day of the week that you can look forward to having that cheesy pizza or a big glass of wine. Stop the craving! If you don't want to gain extra pounds, try adding a few more minutes to your exercise routine for that day.
‘Falling off the wagon’ or regaining some pounds after all of your hard work is frustrating, but it's not the end of the world! Life happens. You can do it again if you put your mind to it! Start or restart with a good mantra like “I am losing weight, I love my body.” When you reach your target weight, change it to, “I love my newly improved, terrific body!”
And, this time, bear in mind the keyword for keeping the weight off - MAINTENANCE!
